Schutt announces candidacy for
Gunnison County Commissioner, District 3
My name is Bob Schutt and I am formally announcing my candidacy for Gunnison County Commissioner, District 3.
I have owned a home in the Gunnison Valley since 1985. My wife, Suzanne and I live here full time and have been married 47 years. We have 3 children and seven grandchildren. They are a very important part of our life. We are members of the Union Congregational Church in Crested Butte.
I graduated from the U. S. Air Force Academy and served as an F-4E combat fighter pilot during Vietnam and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and six Air Medals. I also was activated as a U.S. Army reservist and served as an Orthopaedic Surgeon during Gulf War One operating on injured American soldiers and Iraqi POW’s, receiving the Meritorious Service Medal awarded by the Department of the Army. I retired from the U.S. Army reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel.
After returning from Vietnam, I attended medical school at Texas Tech University School of Medicine and completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Colorado. I also attended Harvard University to obtain business education and experience. My work experience includes serving as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Texas Tech University School of Medicine. In this capacity, I managed the budget, personnel, oversaw research, clinical practice, education of resident physicians and medical students as well as the operation of a Level 1 trauma center. I continue to work part-time as a physician and surgeon with Alpine Orthopaedics in Gunnison County and at the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Currently, I am a member of the Crested Butte Rotary and the Board of Directors for the Crested Butte Music Festival. Additionally, I serve on the Board of Trustees for the Gunnison Valley Hospital System. Advocating for accessibility and affordability of quality health care for all citizens is critical to my goals in public service.
It is essential to provide the best possible education for our children to prepare them for college or careers. The future belongs to our young people and we are responsible for providing opportunities and challenges while protecting their learning environment.
Gunnison County residents understand the need for stewardship of our private and public lands. The outdoor sports we all love, hiking, biking, fishing, skiing and others, drive tourism and represent our major economic industries. Protection of these resources is our community responsibility to absolutely ensure that future generations enjoy the same beauty and resources we are blessed with.
Promoting small business prosperity, economic growth and providing employment and housing opportunities will be a top priority during my term. I understand the need for more employee housing and starter homes for our locals. We must understand the demand for housing, the expense, and impact. Careful planning is necessary to maintain the character of the valley while balancing the needs of businesses and locals. We also need to examine multiple options and find what is best for our towns.
My life has been one of service, in the military and as a physician. I have been involved in this community for over 30 years. As your County Commissioner, my job will be to listen to you and be your voice. My business experience, education, and community involvement make me the best-qualified individual to be your next Gunnison County Commissioner.
